Artists’ Legacies in the Museum Toolkit

Made by, and for, artists, estates, independent curators and museums. Read more about the ALitM project here.

We are pleased to share the ALitM toolkit: a culmination of learnings, insights and exercises, emerging from a 12-month project with Art360 Foundation, the International Curators Forum and tialt, focussed on creating presence for Black British Artists in public collections. The project also explores and enacts a new art ecology involving independent curators, living artists, artists’ estates and museum curators across different levels of seniority. ALitM is supported through Art Fund’s Reimagine grant scheme.

We are grateful for the participation of curators; Tosin Adeosun, Lauren Craig and Alinta Sara, the artist, Vanley Burke, the Estates of Donald Rodney and Maud Sulter, the museums; New Art Gallery Walsall, Wolverhampton Art Gallery and Touchstones Rochdale, and mentors; Sepake Angiama, Tavian Hunter and Kaitlene Koranteng at Iniva, Renée Mussai and Erika Tan.

The creation of the toolkit has been a collaborative exercise. It aims to support greater equity, transparency and care across live, working relationships, and in relation to the access, display and use of artists’ archives and legacies.

The ALitM toolkit is an evolving document - we welcome your feedback and suggestions.
